One of the best parts of expecting a little one is creating the perfectly playful space for them to spend their first days. You can go bolder with color, play with pattern, and dare we say, throw in a ruffle or two. Even better, you can embrace stuffed animals, celebrate everything miniature, and let your inner child run wild.

But, it’s all fun and games until one day you wake up and realize you’re living in a very small (yet still arguably adorable) barnyard fiasco. Don’t worry. We’re here to help. The key to designing a room you’ll love for years to come? Restraint. And thinking ahead, beyond their tater-tot days...

Good thing, Jenn Elliott Blake of SCOUT blog is showing us how it’s done with her modern nursery nook – a contemporary, refined space that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Here are some of the tips we’ve picked up from her:

1 // First up, get your sitting nook together. It definitely should be comfy, so invest in a nice throw blanket and a floor pillow or two to cozy things up. Let’s be honest, you’re going to be spending a lot of sleepless nights here. Make it look (and feel) great.

(Estrato Floor Pillow – $195, Aldama Side Tables – From $165, Abrazo Blanket – $225)

2 // Endless toys, clothes, and other knick-knacks just seem to go hand-in-hand with babies. Make sure you’ve got plenty of storage options to corral the clutter. The key: stay away from plastic bins and go for style statements that can add something to the room.

(Bombo Basket – $135, Nzuri Basket – $135, Sauda Basket – From $95)

3 // Whether it’s a modern art print or sculptural lamp, adding in a few grown-up touches keeps the space feeling sophisticated.  Plus, these classic pieces can grow with your little ones. Or, better yet, they can move to your bedroom when it’s time to change things up.

(Zua Lamp – $175, "Ula Ula en La Bici" Print – $55, Nadira Lamp – $225)

4 // To keep things fresh and airy, add a little greenery throughout the space. We vote for succulents – no need to make room for “water plants” on the to-do list.

(Adia Planter – $65, Ankole Horn Container – $115, Milma Desk Objects – $35)

5 // When it comes to color, go with a neutral palette for the walls and major furniture pieces. Then, throw in a few pops of color here and there with bold accent pillows and blankets. They will add a bit of fun and whimsy without going overboard.
