When in doubt, professional dry cleaning is always going to be your best bet. If you do decide to take matters into your own hands, a few tips for you:
- For wine, coffee, or tea, apply a solution of warm water, detergent and white vinegar with a damp sponge. Wipe with clean cloth and let dry.
- For oil, chocolate, lipstick, nail polish, or ink, scrub or scrape the stained area first. Then apply a solution of hot water and detergent with a clean cloth to absorb as much of the stain as possible. If required, leave the wet cloth overnight before wiping with a clean cloth to dry.

I had hired a designer to help remodel our cute little Boulder, CO bungalow home. This rug was suggested to us and it was the best. decision. ever. If you are even on the fence about this rug, just take the plunge. The material is perfection, the pattern really ties in all the natural elements of our home, and The Citizenry is an incredible company to work with: ethical, humane, and the customer service is incredible. I will love this rug for years to come (i.e. - forever).
Lindsey, Thank you so much for your note! If ever there was a perfect spot for the Keya Rug, it’s in a cute little bungalow in Colorado. We’re so happy that it’s made itself at home in your space! Most of all, we love it when our products end up in homes that care as deeply about artisans and fair-trade environments as we do. There’s honestly nothing better! Cheers to changing the game, one beautiful home good at a time. With gratitude, The Citizenry Team
I was SO disappointed in this because I had such high hopes. Dont get me wrong, i think the rug is pretty in its own way and can definitely make a wonderful rug for certain spaces and decor. That being said, it does NOT look like the pictures and significantly more dull looking. Its not very thick (it can easily fold over) and is more like a woven carpet than a thick plush rug. I think this would look good in a house with more southwest / native decor like the Citizenry uses in a lot of their photos. I also am by no means some sort of rug expert so someone who knows rugs might really be fond of the handwoven work. I have, however, been around enough high end decor to know when something looks and feels cheap. This was extremely underwhelming. I think someone with the right taste and eye for things can pull it off but I dont find it to be an easy rug to make look great. If youre on the fence, you should try it out because the return policy is easy and painless so its worth seeing in person in case it suits your taste and needs. My stars are for the convenience of the ordering process but the rug is surely poorly depicted.
Hi David, We appreciate your note and are so sorry to hear that our rug did not meet your expectations. We’re happy to hear there were certain things you liked about the rug, but our hope is that you’ll love anything you purchase from us (home is more important now than ever, after all). It sounds as if the colors and thickness were not what you hoped for. While the sheep’s wool is certainly more lightweight and variations in color can be expected due to the hand-dyed nature of the material, this is not our typical norm. We’re sending our Product Team out to triple check the latest batch from India to ensure it meets our standards. In the meantime, our Client Experience Team will reach out to you to facilitate a return. We’d be more than happy to help select a replacement if you’d like, too. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment. We’re truly sorry for any inconvenience and hope to prove our commitment to quality to you in the future. Sincerely, The Citizenry Team
We knew we didn't like the rug as soon as we opened the box. The colors are drab compared to the pictures online (the nice peach is more of a tan). Almost as if the rug had been through the wash a few times. Also, the quality was lacking. There were frayed weaves in multiple places throughout the rug. For this price, we expected better. However, I am very happy with their simple return policy.
Hi Sarah, Thanks for your feedback for our Keya Area Rug. It sounds like we may have missed the mark on this one - and we're so sorry to disappoint! We understand you have already initiated a return, and we're glad to hear the returns process was simple. Thanks so much for your support of The Citizenry. Best, - The Citizenry Team
Gorgeous detailing and texture on this rug. Ultimately it wasn't right for what I needed, so it was returned. Pile height was pretty low, so a rug pad would be recommended.
We ordered a 9x12, received an 8x10. Looking more closely at past reviews on this site of the area rugs, this doesn't look like an isolated occurrence. We emailed customer service 3 days ago looking for a resolution, still have not received a response. At this price point, I don't think we should have to deal with both of these issues together - getting the wrong size and getting blown off.
Hi William, Thank you for your feedback. We're so sorry to hear that your order arrived with the wrong product! We'd love to make this right for you, so our client experience team has reached out to you directly. We truly appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback so that we can improve in the future! Best, - The Citizenry Team
