The Story of Beni Ourain Rugs

Rich textures meet an even richer history in Beni Ourain rugs. Adding a touch of timeless sophistication and effortless style in any space, these understated Moroccan rugs are loved around the world for their incredible craftsmanship, distinctive details, and classic comfort. More than simple textured rugs, they’re also a testament to a tradition that stretches back for centuries. One of our favorite ways to create a warm, inviting atmosphere in any space, we’re laying out exactly why these plush rugs are truly one of a kind.

A history like no other

Originally woven by the nomadic Berber tribes of Morocco, Beni Ourain rugs have always mixed durability with beauty. Crafted to provide warmth and comfort in the cold mountain air, they also provided a canvas for artisans to express a rich cultural tradition, weaving motifs and designs. Over time, these plush rugs gained popularity beyond the borders of Morocco, making these distinctive designs one of the most coveted pieces in the world of interiors.

A commitment to quality materials

Soft. Warm. Durable. There’s a reason that Beni Ourain area rugs last long enough to become vintage must-haves. Every piece is crafted from natural, undyed sheep’s wool to create a piece that will last for generations. Sourced from local sheep in the High Atlas Mountains, the wool is renowned for its touchable textures and understated style, adding a cozy charm to your favorite room.

Precise, hand-knotted technique

A labor-intensive process from start-to-finish, Beni Ourain rugs can take a team of six weavers up to a month to complete. The reason is that these beautiful Moroccan rugs are knotted by hand, creating a rich pile that can’t be simply can’t be replicated by a machine. Crafted using a specialized loom, each intricate pattern is made knot by knot through a process that requires time, patience, and precision.

A statement piece with modern appeal

More than a museum piece, these beautiful textured rugs aren’t going anywhere. A perfect match for a range of styles, their neutral color palette, minimal patterns, and total versatility perfectly complement any home, whether it’s modern, boho, or just eclectic. Whether styled as a Moroccan runner rug or the foundation for your favorite space, these plush rugs add warmth, texture, and character wherever they go.

Partnering with women artisans in Morocco

When you order a Beni Ourain rug from The Citizenry, every piece is hand-knotted by a small community of women weavers in Ait Bouguemez. Nestled among mountain brooks and apple orchards, this nimble workshop thrives on a small collective of women who seek to make something fresh from the traditional. If you ever happen to visit, you’re likely to find six women working the loom — three knotting from the front, three from the back. You’ll probably pass a few more in the yard, spinning or cutting yarn. More than anything, you’ll wonder at the work of generations that has inspired a worldwide phenomenon.
