Dreamed up in 1938 by Argentine architects, the butterfly chair is an icon of modern design. Meticulously handcrafted from 100% vegetable tanned saddle leather, this heirloom-quality piece ages beautifully – much like a fine wine.

We partnered with a small leather workshop in Buenos Aires to bring this timeless design back to life. To create these chairs, they use only the highest quality leather from local polo saddleries. Each one takes three days to complete, all made under fair trade standards.

Great quality

The leather and metal are immaculate. It was a little hard to put together, but you can easily find the instructional video on youtube.

Beautiful but disappointing

I've owned the chairs for 2 years now. I have a love hate relationship with them. They are beautiful. The leather is thick and very good quality. But they are not comfortable. The assembly was absolutely miserable and 2 years later - I still don't think they've broken in. The leg pieces disconnect when you lift the chair to move it slightly. They are just high maintenance.

Hi Karen, We appreciate you taking the time to share how the Palermo Chair has held up over the last two years. The assembly is definitely hands-on but should not disconnect once in place. If this issue persists, please shoot us an email at and we can find a solution. Thanks again for your support! - The Citizenry Team

Palermo chair: beautiful chair, tricky assembly

The chair is fantastic, once it’s assmebled. We had the instructions and referenced the site, but still had a tough time. It could be helpful for Citizenry to post a YouTube video explaining assembly. Once we had it assembled, we loved it. The leather is think and sturdy and the seat is comfortable. It’s a welcoming feature in our entryway!

This chair is so comfy and relaxing, it is beautiful and a centerpiece in the room. I couldn’t be happier.
