Lurin is a teeny, tiny town one hour outside of Lima. On our first visit, we took a collectivo taxi (which is an experience in itself), but meeting this cooperative was well worth the drive. This group is a small alliance, created to keep alive the ancient techniques and rich history of craftsmanship in the region. We originally heard about this group's prized art weaving – a piece so beautiful, that out of respect for the amount of time and skill it takes to complete, nobody is allowed to photograph it.  You have to make the drive to this desert town to experience it in person.

The art at the end of that journey, a detailed "calendar" of stories and events through a year, certainly did not disappoint. As we viewed the weaving and talked to the group about their craft, we fell in love with their infectious personalities and mission behind it all. In today’s digital age of anywhere access to anything we could possibly want to see, there’s something so beautiful in the faithful adoration of tangible artistry.

Leveraging the same techniques used to create their prized art weaving, we’re collaborating with this cooperative to make a small batch of flat weave rugs. These rugs are all hand-dyed and woven from start to finish in their tiny Lurin workshop. Check out the final designs here and here.
